  1. A soft, grey-white, somewhat ductile and
  2. malleable metallic element, symbol Nb, atomic
  3. number 41, atomic weight 92.906. It occurs in
  4. nature with tantalum, which it resembles in
  5. chemical properties. It is used in making
  6. stainless steel and other alloys for jet
  7. engines and rockets and for making
  8. superconductor magnets. It was originally
  9. called Columbium (Cb), a name that is still
  10. used in metallurgy, but it was renamed for
  11. Niobe in 1844 by German chemist H Rose
  12. (1795-1864) because of its similarity to
  13. tantalum (Niobe is the daughter of Tantalus
  14. in Greek mythology).
